The ASTM A269 TP304/304L seamless tubing refer to a typical austenitic stainless steel tubing manufactured to meet the specifications outlined in the ASTM A269 standard. It can be made from the stainless steel grade TP304, or its low carbon version TP304L, or dual-certified TP304 & 304L. The tubing shall be produced through seamless processes without any welds or seams such as extrusion or piercing of solid stainless steel billets. The TP304/304L seamless tubes are primarily used for corrosion-resisting instrumentation systems at either low or high temperatures.
In the ASTM A269 standard, there are several stainless steel grades commonly used for seamless tubing. Among them are TP304, TP304L, and the dual-certified TP304/304L. TP304 seamless tubing is a commonly used austenitic stainless steel alloy containing chromium and nickel. TP304 offers excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and good formability. It is suitable for various applications in industries such as chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and oil and gas. TP304L is a low-carbon variant of TP304. The “L” designation stands for “low carbon,” indicating that TP304L has a maximum carbon content of 0.035%. This low carbon content helps minimize carbide precipitation and sensitization during welding, reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion. TP304L offers similar corrosion resistance and mechanical properties to TP304 and is commonly used in applications where welding is required. Dual-certified TP304/304L tubing meets the chemical composition and mechanical property requirements of both TP304 and TP304L grades. This dual certification provides flexibility in material selection and allows for interchangeability between TP304 and TP304L grades based on specific application requirements or availability. It ensures consistent performance and corrosion resistance in various environments.
The following are the chemical requirements for TP304, TP304L, and dual-certified TP304/304L stainless steel grades as specified in the ASTM A269 standard:
